Lion-tailed Macaque

Considered old-world monkeys, lion-tailed macaques are one of the smallest primates. Jet black fur covers their bodies, while lion-like manes surround their faces. In the wild, they live in groups of between ten and twenty. They use loud calls, lip-smacking, and even yawning to communicate with each other. Lion-tailed macaques are listed as "threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the small population at the Baton Rouge Zoo helps support their conservation.

Red River Hog

Native to Africa, red river hogs live in rainforests, forested valleys, and wet, dense savannas. They're easily recognized by their reddish-brown fur, black legs, and white markings around their eyes. Red river hogs are mainly nocturnal. Much of their time is spent searching for food, and they often follow chimpanzees in search of dropped fruit.

Sumatran Tiger

One of the biggest attractions at the Baton Rouge Zoo near Denham Springs is the resident Sumatran tiger. This wild feline is a majestic creature featuring dark orange fur and black stripes. Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the tiger subspecies. Males weigh up to 265 pounds, while females are around 200 pounds. At present, they are critically endangered. Deforestation is their biggest threat, with only 400 to 500 remaining in the wild.

River Otter

Known for their playful demeanor, river otters enjoy mud sliding and chasing their tails. They can stay underwater for up to eight minutes. Their strong tails propel them as they swim, while their whiskers are used to detect prey in dark or cloudy water.
